Beginners Sewing a Curve Stitch

If you are new to sewing then you should know that being able to sew a curve stitch is one of the most common fundamentals. Not all seams are linear and therefore, need stitching that can bend with the seam. I hope to help you understand how to perfect this type of stitch because it will become extremely useful.

1.    Since you are a beginner, you shouldn’t try stitching a curved seam on a new pair of clothes. You should grab an old pair of clothes or piece of fabric to practice on. Just being able to stitch this type of seam is a small part of what you will need to master. You should practice this over and over until you get it right. If you are using a pedal powered sewing machine then it will become even more important. Adjusting the power while concentrating on stitching takes some practice and technique.

2.    You should always have the pressure foot of the sewing machine up off the base. After you have slide in the material and are ready to begin, you can then lower it and adjust as needed. One of the reasons we use a pressure foot is to adjust and compensate for different thicknesses of fabrics.

3.    The worst thing has happened to me in the past. I forgot to make a simple back stitch at the beginning of my stitching and it all came apart afterwards. You should always do a small back stitch at the beginning and the end of your projects to keep the ends from falling apart.

4.    The best advice I can give you is to go slowly in the beginning. It will take you quite a lot of practice to get the stitch smooth and seemingly straight. Maybe people go way to fast and end up creating zigzags all over the place.

And that my friend is all there is to sewing a curved stitch. You will get frustrated in the beginning but once you practice you will understand how to feel it out and make it look perfect.
